I. Installation Topics
Q: I'm getting an error when I start
GuildBoss that says something to the effect of:
"Undefined error: Component <component name
here> not correctly registered: file is missing or
invalid"
A: Please email me with the name of the file in question
and I'll send step-by-step instructions to clear this up.
Q: I'm getting
a "Can't create DAO Workspace" error when
starting GuildBoss.
A: This is due to an incompatibility with regard to
a Microsoft database engine DLL. Click here for complete step-by-step instructions on
fixing this problem.
For any other installation problems please email
me with the details and we'll get it fixed ASAP!
II. General Topics
Q: I can't
seem to get images to show up on my web reports. What am
I doing wrong?
A: You need to tell GuildBoss where your images are
stored on your web server. You can do this in the
Application Options window (under the Tools menu) by
choosing the Web tab and entering the actual path to the
images. The path can be a fully qualified URL like
"http://www.guildboss.com/images/" or just a
subdirectory name like "/images/". In the later
case, the subdirectory is directly off the directory
where the reports are stored, for instance:
www.guildboss.com/reports/images
So in this case, I'd have
my reports in the "/reports" subdirectory and
my images in the "/images" subdirectory.
Also, make sure your image
filenames match EXACTLY as they appear in the report
file's HTML source code. They ARE case-sensitive so
Promote.gif is not the same as promote.gif.
NOTE: If your reports and your images
are in the same directory on the web server you can just
leave the "Images" path option in GuildBoss
totally blank!!
Q: Does
GuildBoss work with free web-based email services like
Yahoo! and Hotmail?
A: Yes, but Yahoo! and Hotmail both require that you
"unlock" the SMTP services by checking your
Inbox before you can send messages through their servers.
Their SMTP service typically stays in this
"unlocked" state for about 5 minutes after you
check your mail so you must send mail through GuildBoss during
this period. So, to send email using free web-based email
like Yahoo or Hotmail:
- Open your browser
- Check your free email
- Send your email with
GuildBoss
Also note that some ISP's
will not allow you to send a single email to more than 20
recipients, as they consider this to be potential SPAM.
If this happens, try sending the email in batches of no
more than 20 recipients at a time. I'm planning on making
this automatic in GuildBoss 2 which is currently
under development.
Q: I'm having
trouble sending email using my ISP's SMTP server?
A: In some rare cases an ISP verifies the sender's
authenticity before allowing access to the SMTP services
by a) requiring you to log into their POP servers, b)
checking your return address, c) checking your IP
address. They do this to prevent spammers from sending unsolicited commercial emails (UCE) through their servers.
In most cases either b)
and/or c) will work fine with GuildBoss (assuming you are
legitimately a subscriber to the ISP!) but GuildBoss
1.11a does not support POP-authenticity login
yet. So if the ISP requires this (which is rare), you
will be unable to send email with GuildBoss 1.11a.
However, I am adding POP-authenticity to GuildBoss 2.
Q: Does
GuildBoss support remote profile editing?
A: Not yet but it's currently under development.
Q: Will
members be able to have multiple "alternate"
character profiles?
A: Yes, I want to break the current member
information down into separate tables so the member's
'real-life' data (Name, Address, etc) can be stored
independently of their character information. Thus,
allowing multiple characters per member without having to
duplicate member-related data.
Q: How can I
rename the Report Images column?
A: On the Tools menu, click Grid
Designer and choose Report Images from the list
in the Available Columns drop-down box. Then,
simply change the Caption property to whatever
you want to rename it and click Save.
Q: How can I
remove the Report Images
column
from roster reports?
A: Follow these steps:
- Go to the Application
Options window and click the Reports
tab.
- In the Include
the 'Report Images' column on roster reports
frame, select the option entitled Only if the
column is visible in the Roster Grid.
- Click the Save
& Close button.
- Next, open the Roster
Grid Designer window.
- In the Available
Columns drop-down, choose Report
Images from the list.
- If the Visible
checkbox has a checkmark in it, uncheck it now.
- Click the Save
& Close button
Q: How do I
get the ICQ Status indicator to work? It keeps saying
"Disabled" when it should be showing as
"Online"?
A: There is a checkbox in ICQ's "Security &
Privacy" options that must be enabled so others can
see when the ICQ user is online or not. The option is
called "Web Aware". Members that want others to
know their ICQ status via roster reports must enable this
feature.
NOTE: Apparently
there is a bug with some versions of ICQ (it's not a
GuildBoss bug!) that shows some members as always having
their indicator disabled. ICQ is working on a resolution
and you can follow the tech support discussion on ICQ's
message boards by clicking here.
Q: Does
GuildBoss work with action and strategy gaming clans?
A:
Absolutely! GuildBoss can be easily customized to meet
the needs of any gaming organization playing in any game
or genre. There are folks using it now for Starcraft,
Counterstrike, Diablo, Ultima Online, Quake, Star Wars
Rebellion, DAOC, MechWarrior, EverQuest, Asheron's Call,
BattleTech, and many more.
Q: Is
GuildBoss free?
A: No, GuildBoss is shareware.
You may download and evaluate GuildBoss for a period of
up to thirty (30) days. At the end of the 30-day
evaluation period you must either pay the registration
fee or remove the application from your hard drive. For
more information please refer to the Ordering Information page (also found in the Help
file).
Q: What are
the benefits of registering GuildBoss?
A: Registration entitles you to:
- A personal
registration code to remove the shareware
"nag" screen and the 10-member limit
imposed to encourage registration.
- Free upgrades for the
foreseeable future.
- Free unlimited technical
support via email.
- Free subdomain under
GuildBoss.com to use the remote access features
(coming soon).
- Invitation to
upcoming private betas.
- Peace of mind that
you did the right thing. :-)
Q: If I
register, can I use GuildBoss on more than one machine,
like a desktop at work and at home, and perhaps a laptop
for school?
A: Yes. In compliance with the license agreement you
may install and use GuildBoss non-simultaneously on multiple machines. In other
words, you can use GuildBoss personally on multiple
machines but cannot have multiple users running GuildBoss
at the "same time" on multiple machines.
